Secret Rooftops, Underground Bars and Hidden Parks
NYC rewards the curious. Behind unmarked doors, above parking garages, and below street level — here are the hidden spots that make this city endlessly surprising.
Secret Rooftops
- The Elevated Acre (55 Water Street, FiDi) — A park on top of a parking garage. Escalator from street level. Lawn, amphitheater, and harbor views. 99% of New Yorkers dont know it exists.
- Rooftop at Pier 17 (Seaport) — Free public rooftop with Brooklyn Bridge views. Most people think its private — its not. Just take the elevator up.
- The Roof Garden at The Met (5th Avenue) — Seasonal rooftop with art installations and Central Park views. Included with museum admission. Open May-October.
Underground Bars
- The Basement (East Village) — No sign, stairs going down. House and techno. The sound system is world-class.
- 124 Old Rabbit Club (Lower East Side) — Below street level, candlelit, and feels like a 1920s secret. Cocktails $16-20.
- Apotheke (Chinatown) — Hidden behind an unmarked door on Doyers Street (the old “Bloody Angle” of gang wars). Cocktails made like prescriptions by bartenders in lab coats.
Hidden Parks
- Greenacre Park (51st Street, Midtown) — 25-foot waterfall drowns out all city noise. Heated in winter. Free seating.
- Tudor City Greens (42nd Street, East Side) — Elevated parks above 42nd Street with UN and East River views. Almost nobody up here.
- Paley Park (53rd Street, Midtown) — A pocket park with a waterfall wall. 12 feet wide. The most peaceful 60 seconds in Midtown.
